A Family Fun Project

It’s a truly one of a kind gift from the heart.  You can make your own custom beaded bracelet for Mom or Grandma with the birthstones of her children and loved ones. Or, you can design a bracelet for the Graduate with the stones that will help them embark on the next phase of their life.

You are getting this month’s Newsletter a little late because we have been really busy unpacking more than 40 boxes that we just shipped in from the Tucson Gem and Mineral Show earlier this month. Our jewelry cases have all been re-merchandised and beautiful new designer jewelry and 14K gold jewelry are being put in the cases daily. We are so excited to introduce you to some powerful new stones that we have never had in the store.

Please note that the Sedona Gem and Jewelry Show is a week earlier this year because St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Saturday and we didn’t want to interfere with anyone’s party.

Our Very Important Buyer (VIB) Preview Show starts on Friday afternoon, March 9^th from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. At the Preview Show, you get to be the first to see the newest stones and jewelry pieces as we unpack them. The Gem and Jewelry Show continues on Saturday, March 10^th from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A part of the proceeds from our Gem and Jewelry Show will be donated to The Hawaii Foodbank.

Special Gratitude Tokens will be given to customers who spend $150.00 or more at our Gem Show (while supplies last).  You can choose to keep your special token or you can return the token to us in April 2012 and you’ll receive 20% off your entire purchase of regular priced merchandise.

If you want to avoid the crowds, the busiest times for The Show are usually from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening; from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.  The quietest times, if you want to have a little more space to be with the crystals are from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday.

One of the best ways to see and feel some of the special high vibrational stones is to come to Deidre’s Free Crystal Workshop on Wednesday March 7^th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. The class theme is “Spring into Action,” it’s a hands-on workshop where you will have the opportunity to work with the newest crystals that Deidre has brought in for the Show.  She will teach you how you can use your crystals to energize and motivate yourself to achieve your goals. I was lucky, the weather in Tucson this year was a balmy 70 degrees in the day and low 40′s in the evenings which is a lot better than the frigid 7 degrees and the freak ice storm they had last year. The Tucson Gem and Mineral Show is a place where people from all over the world who deal in gemstones, minerals, fossils and jewelry gather each year in late January/early February. It is considered the biggest and best Gem Show in the world because of the sheer number of buyers and  sellers who congregate there.  The show is about a month long and comprises of over 35 different show sites that are spread out all over the city of Tucson.  Just imagine humongous tents that are larger than football stadiums and convention halls filled with thousands of vendors. There are dozens of  hotels where all the rooms are filled with  purveyors of gemstones and jewelry from lower priced fashion pieces to high end diamonds and colored stones. If you ever go to the show, good walking shoes are a must and a suitcase full of cash is required.  Be aware that no matter what your budget is, you will want to spend way more than you have with you.  I was like a kid in a candy shop!  It was so much fun and hard work all rolled into one.

One of the cool things about this show is that you get to see gigantic stones specimens and really rare stones that you usually only see in museums.  Not only can you take a goofy picture with them but you can usually touch them as well. I try to take pictures next to some of these stones so you can see it in human scale. There was a huge Amethyst Geode that was low to the ground and it was the size of a double bed.  I tried to get a picture of me sleeping in the geode but they wouldn’t let me crawl inside of it. I think it was a good thing since Amethyst Geodes points are very sharp!

Shungite Pyramid and Bracelets

What is Shungite?

At my first stop at the Tucson Gem Show, a dear friend came up to me and said one word “Shungite.”  I said “what’s that?” Then I went on to discover that it is the newest and the oldest healing stone at the show.

My Russian dealer friend, Vadim showed me how the stone’s very low resistance to energy flow helps it to conduct and filter while energy flows through it. He put an electrical meter to the stone and showed me a super low number to prove how low the electrical resistance was. I brought back a nice variety of Shungite in Pyramids, 10mm bracelets, 12mm bracelets, egg shapes, beads, raw and tumbled stones in a number of different sizes. It is sure to be a very popular stone, so if you like the stone, I would buy some right away.  I will not be able to get more for another year.

Shungite is a 2 billion year old stone found only in Karelia, Russia. Shungite is a rare carbon-based material of organic origin that can provide many benefits to the human body.

This stone contains Fullerene–a recently discovered carbon formation. Astrophyllite

Astrophyllite:

Many people look at the rare and beautiful Astrophyllite and describe seeing a burst of stars or a meteor shower in the complex matrix of the stone. We have a few larger pieces of natural Russian Astrophyllite with bright starbursts as well as Astrophyllite pendants for you to choose from.

Forming in shades of rich coppery bronze, Astrophyllite, although typically found in Russia, has also been found in Greenland, Norway and the U.S.  A stone of happiness and joy, Astrophyllite brings harmony to home and family relationships. It is a great stone for deepening the connection between people, especially on a soul-level. Astrophyllite also protects against negative energy, helps to neutralize radiation and harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Astrophyllite encourages self-awareness and helps one to  realize their unlimited potential.

Fuchsite and Ruby

Fuchsite and Ruby:

Fuchsite, a green mica, on occasion forms in a natural composite with red Ruby.  Found primarily in South India, this stone combines the courage, strength, and passion for which Ruby is known with the calming, nourishing, emotional healing of Fuchsite . A very unusual stone, we have one large Fuchsite/Ruby Point,  hand lathed Fuchsite/Ruby Bowl and a nice assortment of heart shapes.

Fuchsite in combination with Ruby is a great stone for wisdom and developing emotional balance and independence. In challenging times of conflict, it instills inner-confidence, inspiring one to be true to themselves. Fuchsite with Ruby clears negativity and stagnant energy from the body and one’s environment.  Supportive in the healing process, this stone encourages health and well-being while giving one the strength to cast off negative patterns and habits.

In the picture, placed inside the Fuchsite/Ruby bowl is a Natural Star Ruby. Ruby has been cherished throughout the ages. In the Middle Ages, Ruby was believed to resolve disagreements, and aid in healing and removing negative thought patterns. It is an excellent stone for protection from negativity. Ruby is frequently found in Brazil, U.S., India, Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka. It has been known as the stone of royalty. This stone can help to dispel nightmares and fears that may keep you up at night. Working with Ruby clears negativity and inspires you with passion, joy, and the enthusiasm to pursue your dreams.  It is said that Rubies can bring additional “prana” into the bloodstream providing vibrational support for cells, organs and systems. We just put out some of the largest Star Ruby hand pieces from India that we have ever had in the store as well as some nice palm size Shiva Lingams from the Narmada River region in India.

Men’s Rings Just In!

We haven’t forgotten about our male clientele! Over the years, we have had many requests from customers who wanted well-designed men’s rings. Malia heard you loud and clear so she spent a lot of time searching for great rings with interesting stones in men’s sizes from 9-12. Malia found Steve Osback from Arizona who specializes in contemporary Southwestern ring designs set with stones such as American Turquoise, Tiger’s Eye, Onyx, Copper, Native Silver, Ruby, Sonoran Sunrise Cuprite, Malachite/Chrysacolla, and even Dinosaur Bone.  They range in price anywhere from $80 to $300.

New Jewelry Designer Discovery

Watermelon Tourmaline set in 14k Gold

Not only did we discover some new high energy stones, we also found a few wonderful new jewelry designers too!

Handmade in New York by a company called Tchu Tchu Ka, Brazilian designer Regina Rodrigues Morsi makes one of a kind 14k Gold drop jewelry as pictured to the left. The Watermelon Tourmaline Necklace features gemstone briolettes and watermelon tourmaline slices that can be worn in the evening for a special occasion or during the day with a pretty floral dress.  The Watermelon Tourmaline is paired together with Blue Topaz, for creativity and communication and Peridot for abundance and love. We have a matching pair of Watermelon Tourmaline Earrings that will complete the set! The earrings have beautiful Watermelon Tourmaline as the main stone, but are paired together with the energies of Blue Topaz for clear insight, Citrine for happiness, Garnet for physical strength and passion, Peridot for money and friendship, and Ruby for wisdom and knowledge.

February’s Birthstone: Amethyst

Amethyst Chandelier Necklaces and Earrings

February’s main Birthstone is Amethyst–an excellent stone for relaxation, meditation and restful sleep. Thai designer Piromaya from Oregon is another new designer we found in Tucson.  She hand makes beautiful Sterling Silver Chandelier style earrings and jewel drop necklaces.  She has a great eye for putting together juicy colors.  Some of the necklace and earrings come in sets, or you can mix and match individual pieces.

Pictured to the right is our Amethyst Drop Necklace that would pair well with formal Prom or Mother’s Day dresses. You can choose either the Amethyst Drop Earrings or the Paraiba Quartz and Amethyst Earrings to complete the look.

Amethyst has been called the “stone of spirituality, contentment and meditation” for its calming and soothing energy. When things get hectic, Amethyst will help bring a peaceful state of mind that can transform any negative energy into positive loving energy. Happy Chinese New Year of the Water Dragon!

The Year of the Water Dragon has a lot in store for all of us!

According to Lillian Too, 2012 is said to be a powerful year for both big transformations and conflict; everything good or bad tends to be magnified because the Dragon is considered to be the most powerful sign of the entire Chinese Zodiac.  The big changes will be both political as well as economic and will impact many people and possibly change the balance of power in the world.

Astrologically, this is a much better year in terms of starting new projects, implementing new ideas and finding new ways for personal growth. With careful planning you will be able to reap the benefits of your hard work. The Fire Element represents creativity and because there is a shortage of Fire this year – it is best to implement only well thought out ideas for a greater chance of success.  It is the clever and wise that will prevail this year. Lillian Too recommends adding brighter lights, red crystals, red lamp shades and red candles to add more of the Fire Element to your space.

With Zodiac Feng Shui, you can consult Master Wu’s book as to which direction your zodiac sign lies in this year.  According to Master Wu, the most accurate annual Feng Shui planning combines both your Zodiac Feng Shui with the Flying Star Feng Shui.  Each Zodiac resides in a specific direction and is affected by the Flying Star Energies more severely if your sign is in that sector.  In Zodiac Feng Shui, there are three directions to keep calm and quiet. It is also recommended that everyone place remedies in those directions.  To guard against offending Tai-Sui (God of the Year) place a Pi Yao (celestial protector from heaven) in the Southeast and Northwest with his head facing the front door. It is very important to avoid digging or major renovations in this direction.  Dragon and Dogs should carry Pi Yao charms or wear Pi Yao jewelry for further protection. To avoid the inauspicious energies of the 3 Killing, one should display 3 Chi-Lins (dragon head with horse body)in the direction of the South with their heads facing the entrance door.

Excess Wood Element this year can bring about more competitive and combative feelings among friends, family and colleagues. We need to work harder this year to be more harmonious and peaceful with each other.  Choose your words carefully this year as they will seem louder and more forceful and can lead to arguments and misunderstandings. Master Wu recommends carrying the Jade Cicada and/or Rooster Charm or Lotus Charm as they can help you dispel the negative chi of the Flying Star #3 Quarrelsome Star.  He also recommends displaying 3 Lotus Lights in the southwest direction of your home, office or bedroom to keep the energy peaceful and reduce the feeling of hostility and impatience.  Those born in the year of the Ram and Monkey are more affected by this #3 Star.

This year Wealth Luck is favorable and can be more easily manifest due to 2 Earth Elements in the chart. To welcome the auspicious energies of the Wealth Star #8 you can display a crystal ball, amethyst natural crystals, or a jade 8 carving in the west. To activate your personal wealth energy, you can carry a Jade 8 charm. Those born in the year of the Rooster will have an easier time with bringing in more prosperity.

The Illness Star #2 flies to the North this year and you can display a metal Hu-Lu gourd, Golden Kwan Yin or a metal windchime to suppress this energy.  People especially those born in the year of the Rat who have a living room, bedroom or office in the North should carry a Hu-Lu metal or jade charm.

The Robbery Star #7 is especially strong because it is a metal star flying to the metal sector so it must be subdued to avoid loss in your home or office.  Place a bowl of Still Water in the direction of the Northwest or carry a Blue Elephant and a Blue Rhino with you to reduce the negative impact of this star. Those born in the year of the Dog and Boar should definitely be more pro-active in this area by using both cures.

Because Authority Star # 6 rules the center of the Feng Shui chart and your home this year, this star brings luck from the heavens and everyone in the home and office can benefit when you strengthen the energies of the middle of your home or office.  Lillian Too recommends adding 6 smooth crystal balls to activate the energy for loving family harmony. While Master Wu recommends placing 6 lucky coins or 6 gold ingots with Guang Gung to bring good fortune and power.

The Misfortune Star #5 flies to the direction of the southeast.  To subdue this negative Chi place a pagoda made of metal, a hanging bell or a lucky bamboo in the Southeast. If your kitchen, bedroom or entrance is in the southeast direction it is advisable to remove red or reduce things that create heat for the entire year.  Dragon and Snake people are more affected by this star and should carry a five element pagoda key chain with them.

Victory Star #1 brings success, fame and career advancement energy to the south direction. People born in the year of the Horse will benefit from this Star although the energy is not as strong this year. Placing a Golden Hotei holding a Ru Yi or a lucky bamboo in a blue vase will help bring about more career success.  Those born in the year of the Horse should carry a Ru Yi Charm.

Students who wish to strengthen their academic success should display a Green Pagoda or Crystal Point in the East. The lucky #4 Green Scholastic Star is especially strong this year because of the double wood element. People born in the year of the Rabbit should carry a pagoda charm.

Those born in the year of the Ox and Tiger will be happier and have more joyous occasions due to the Flying Purple Star #9. Placing a Lotus Light in the Northeast will enhance everyone’s happiness in your home or office.

Master Wu’s Year’s Guide to the Water Dragon

At Sedona, we highly recommend Master Wu’s book “Feng Shui 2012 Year of the Dragon, Secret of Heaven and Earth which has been very helpful in explaining how to Feng Shui your home and office for the Year of the Water Dragon. In his book he combines Five Element Feng Shui with Chinese Zodiac Feng Shui and Flying Star Feng Shui.  He makes recommendations on how to subdue the negative energies and enhance the more auspicious energies for Personal Luck as well as Household Luck using Feng Shui cures, protective talismans and good luck symbols.  My staff and I were privileged to have Master Wu give us a workshop on how to use Feng Shui.  He created two large charts for us to share with customers so they can visualize the Flying Star Chart put together with their own Chinese Zodiac Sign.  One chart shows what personal Feng Shui items you can carry with you to enhance your Personal Luck and the second chart shows what Feng Shui cures to use in your home for you and your family.

Chinese New Year Traditional Cleaning

According to the Lunar calendar, Chinese New Year is on January 23^rd this year and the first day of Spring begins on February 4^th.  In most cultures, it is an important tradition to do your “spring cleaning” before Spring starts.  Most Feng Shui Masters advise you to start cleaning your home/office one month prior to the Chinese New Year and also to clean up your Feng Shui cures that you can re-use this year.  After your house/office is clean you can start to place your cures in the correct area in anticipation of the New Year.  On New Year’s day, there should be no cleaning, vacuuming or cutting as those actions will sweep or cut away the good energy that you want to welcome into your home/office.  Other Chinese New Year traditions are to give Lucky Red Envelopes called Lisee with money to children, younger relatives and employees.  At Sedona, we carry lots of different types of Lisee with Dragon designs as well as Lucky Red Paper with auspicious sayings that some people place on the back of their front door. Chinese people also celebrate by eating sticky Nin Gao which represents prosperity and family togetherness sticking to you.  Another customary dish for New Years is a vegetarian dish (not vegan as it may contain oyster sauce) called Jai that is purifying and represents a fresh start for the New Year. Ward Centers will have a Lion Dance on Feb. 4^th, the first day of Spring so come down and feed the lion Lisee to bring you more prosperity and good fortune.

We just unpacked this gorgeous hand-carved one-piece Burmese Jade Dragon and Phoenix that sits on a wooden stand.  This highly detailed carving in light green jadeite with just a hint of yellow jade at the top is just spectacular.  Next year is the Year of the Water Dragon.  Did you know the secret friend of the Dragon is the Rooster? The 17th Annual Komen Hawaii Race for the Cure is upon us as we strive to make the public more aware of Breast Cancer and promote early detection. Historically, Dendritic Agate has been worn  as a protective amulet. It has also been used in ceremonies to bring about courage and bravery.  Rutilated Quartz has a legend of the gold streaks being the hair of Venus, therefore contributing to it’s connection to love and relationships.  The golden streaks are called rutiles which is a mineral that is mostly titanium dioxide.  Rutilated quartz is also worn to strengthen ones immune system and promote healing.
