Coming as a pair, the Chi-Lin, sometimes called Kirin, is the Bringer of Peace, Happiness, and Good Fortune.
The Chi-Lin symbolizes perfect goodness, wisdom, harmony, protection, and longevity. When placed in the home, it is said to bring great virtue and peace, thus ensuring happiness. To give a Chi-Lin as a gift not only expresses good wishes and blessings for the one you are giving it to, but it brings a change of fortune for the good. In China, it is also believed to bestow a family with many children.
Also known as the Kirin in Japan, the Chi-Lin has been called the unicorn of hte East. Unlike Western unicorns, the Chi-Lin is sometimes described as having the body of a deer, the tail of an ox, the scales of a fish and one, two, or three fur-covered horns or antlers. Chi-Lin are believed to be animals of such benevolence that they would never step on any living thing, not even a blade of grass. They are said to be the swiftest of all creatures and could not only walk on water, but when on land, their steps produced neither sound, nor footprints.
The appearance of a Chi-Lin was always auspicious, as they would be seen at times heralding a mighty, virtuous ruler, or a great teacher, or a wise sage. Chi-Lin are also said to usher in dynasties and eras of great peace and prosperity for the people.
