Hotei, widely known as The Laughing Buddha, is symbolized as the bringer of Wishes of Wealth, Abundance and Happiness.
Hotei is pictured with a fat belly symbolizing wealth, both spiritual and worldly. He is always smiling to show his contentment with himself and the world. It is sometimes believed that when we are content with what we have, wealth is never ending and will always flow in our lives.
In China, he is known as Mi-Lo-Fo. Hotei was believed to be a Chinese monk named Pu Tai who lived in the 10th century. Named for the linen beggar’s sack he carried, he often wandered through towns performing miracles of wonder. Before his death, he revealed himself to be an incarnation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the future.
Hotei may have one or more of the following symbols:
-Coin: that you will always have enough money to have food.
-Fan: to drive away the winds of bad luck and ill-fortune.
-Gold Bouillon: prosperity and riches.
-Gourd: carries the Nectar of Immortality for a full and rich life.
-Linen Sack: after which he is named, abundance in all its forms.
