Although widely referred to and sold as Bornite or Peacock Ore, this stone is almost always the closely related mineral Chalcopyrite which has been treated with acid to tarnish the surface, bringing forth bright iridescent purples, blues, and greens
This ore has been smelted as the main source of copper for over 5000 years
Primary locations: Australia, Canada, Mexico, Peru, U.S.A., and various European countries
Its name is derived from Ancient Greek χαλκός khalkós meaning “copper” and πυρίτης λίθος pyritēs lithos “stone which strikes fire”
A copper iron sulfide occurring widely in porphyry copper deposits (volcanic hydrothermal veins)
