    • Garnet is a group of silicate minerals with similar physical properties and crystal forms, but differing in chemical composition— the most widely known varieties include: Pyrope, Almadine, Spessartine, Grossular (Hessonite & Tsavorite), Uvarovite, and Andradite
    • Although typically known as a red gemstone, garnets may come in a wide range of color including: shades of orange, pink, green, yellow, and even the rare blue
    • The name Garnet has its roots in the Latin granatus from granum (grain, seed), as it was believed to resemble the pōmum (apple) grānātum (seeded)— or pomegranate
    • Spessartine is a manganese aluminum silicate Mn2+3Al2(SiO4)3 — not to be confused with Spessartite (rock), a lamprophyre igneous rock
    • Spessartine is named for Spessart, Bavaria, one of the sources of this gemstone
    • Occurs in shades of orange, red, and brown
