The design of this charm represents the Universe in Harmony and Balance.

This charm is based on a historic Tibetan design.  Shaped like the shell of a tortoise, the outermost ring features a stylized tortoise face at the top and four arms reaching outward, embracing the whole Mandala design within.  A mandala is a circular design based in Buddhism representing the order of the Universe.

Within the next ring of the design are the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals in their annual order.

Within that is the Ba-Gua 八卦 (meaning 8-trigram symbols).  The patterns of 3 broken and unbroken lines in a ring represents the 8 fundamental elements of Taoist cosmology arranged in a way that embodies harmony and balance.

Finally, in the center is the 9 Palaces of the Luo Shu Square (雒書 luò shū, Luo River Scroll), or the Nine Halls Diagram (九宫图 jiǔ gōng tú) one of the fundamental diagrams of Feng Shui, Flying Star Feng Shui, and the I-Ching.

The legend of the Luo Shu Square dates back to 650 BC.  During the times of great floods in China, one day, Emperor Yu walked along the river Luo.  A great turtle emerged from the river with an unusual 3 x 3 pattern on its shell indicating numbers.  This pattern became the basis of the Luo Shu Square, a mathematical grid where the sum of numbers from each row, column or diagonal is the same.

Basically, no matter which direction you add the numbers—horizontal, vertical or diagonal—they always add up to 15.  Number 15 is considered a powerful number because it corresponds to the number of days in each of the 24 cycles of the Chinese solar year. In other words, it is the number of days in the cycle of the new moon to the full moon.

The cylindrical "Prayer Wheel" at the top is engraved with the Tibetan mantra:

"Om Mani Padme Hum":
Literal Translation: Om-Jewel-Lotus-Indivisible

Om is considered by may to be the "Sound of the Universe".  
Om (also “AUM” in Sanskrit) is a mantra which is a syllable or series of syllables that are chanted to bring about focus and transformation.

Om is made up of the three sounds:

  • “Ah” representing the breath of creation
  • “Uh” representing the vibration of preservation
  • “Mm” representing the completion of things

Together, they represent the rhythms of the universe and the natural cycle of creation, sustenance, and clearing away to make way for the new once again.
By this mantra, all disharmony is brought into balance.

Om Mani Padme Hum - Mantra of Compassion:
This mantra is the embodiment in sound of the essence of Avalokiteshvara (Sanskrit) or Chenrezig (Tibetan) the Bodhisattva of Compassion, better known as Kuan Yin in the Chinese culture.  The Dalai Lama is believed to be an avatar of Chenrezig or the embodiment of Kuan Yin/Compassion in human form.

This essence of this mantra is: 

  • OM or AUM also representing right Body, Speech, and Mind
  • MANI is the jewel of compassion and selfless love for all beings
  • PADME is the lotus of purity and the pure wisdom in understanding that we are all interconnected
  • HUM is the indivisibility of acting with compassion in all things

Together, Om Mani Padme Hum is a mantra or prayer for the liberation from suffering of all beings, through acting in compassion, wisdom, and purity in body, speech, and mind.
