• An amorphous, typically transparent opal with a glass-like globular or botryoidal structure of silica SiO₂·nH₂O with a 3-8% water content; formed in volcanic & pegmatite environments
• Its official name: Opal-AN, A = Amorphous (not crystalline in structure); N = Network (its form is a network of silica-glass); due to its structure it does not display the opalescence-fire found in precious opals
• Also known as “Muller’s Glass”, named after Austrian mineralogist and “discoverer” of this mineraloid— Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein
• Many specimens fluoresce typically bright green in UV light due to residual traces of Uranium within; this is NOT considered harmful as the barely measurable radiation is self-shielded within the stone and is not in significant enough levels to pose a health risk, or penetrate skin
• Hyalite is from Greek Ýalos ύαλος  or Ancient Greek ὕαλος Húalos, meaning “glass”
