The Pi Chu is a protective heavenly creature resembling a Chinese Lion with horn(s), and little wings allowing it to fly between Heaven and Earth.

The 9th son of the Dragon King, and favorite of the Jade Emperor, the Pi Chu eats but does not dispose.  With its big infinite appetite, especially for gold, silver, and jewels, it is recommended for people who want lots of money coming in but not a lot of money going out.

Fierce guardian and loyal protector, they ward off, attack, and eat demons, evil spirits, disease, and bad luck— turning it into great wealth.

Pi Chu (regardless of whether it is the male or female variety) provides a minimum of eight blessings:

• Brings good luck and fortune
• Generates good Feng Shui or Earth luck
• Attracts wealth and prosperity

• Grants windfall luck
• Guards against accidents in travel
• Appeases Tai Sui and brings good favor

This Pi Chu features the Chinese character 福 (fú/fuk) stylized in an older script, which means "Good Luck" or "Good Fortune" implying "Blessings" and "Happiness".  It is depicted in the shape of a Hulu Gourd which the two halves in Taoist belief represents Heaven and Earth.  The two halves also form the number “8” which is a good luck number of wealth and prosperity.  Gourds were also used to carry medicines and elixirs of great spiritual power.

The Pi Chu also carries two strands of 5 coins - symbols of money and wealth, 5 coins specifically protect from misfortune and bad luck; 5 also represents the harmony between the fundamental 5 Feng Shui elements of Earth, Metal, Water, Wood, and Fire.  They are believed to not only bestow wealth and prosperity but lasting harmony and peace.

The unique shape of Chinese coins represents balance and harmony: the square hole in the middle represents Earth, while the round circle of the coin itself represents Heaven. 

Coin symbols can also be found on the front legs of the Pi Chu as well as the Jewel Ball accent hanging at the bottom of the keychain.

The top of the Hulu Gourd, the forehead and the hind legs of the Pi Chu, all feature the Lingzhi (灵芝/líng zhī) motif, which is the "mushroom of immortality" which grants longevity and a full life of contentment.

This is the same shape and design as when depicted as "Auspicious Clouds" (祥云/xiángyún) suggesting the Pi Chu's heavenly origins, as well as Dragon connection, as it is the Dragon that brings the rains of Spring that nourish the land.
The word for cloud, (云; 雲; yún) also is a homonym for "good fortune" (运; 運; yùn).

Sometimes depicted with 2 horns, the female Pi Chu, Bìxié (辟邪 bìxié, meaning to ward off evil spirits) is better at protecting.

Sometimes depicted with 1 horns, the male Pi Chu, Tiānlù (天祿; tiānlù, meaning heavenly blessing/prosperity) is better at amassing wealth.
