There is a great deal of confusion about this rock due to various misused tradenames.  Many online sources confuse the composition, source, and properties of this rock with others, attributing incorrect information due to misidentification.

• Incorrectly called Zebra Rock or Zebra Stone, a completely different material from Western Australia (reddish-brown and white banded sedimentary rock); erroneously called Zebra Jasper or Zebra Agate - not Chalcedony at all
• Calcite is calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), the principal constituent of limestone and marble
• The description of “Onyx” or “Onyx-Marble” has also been loosely used by the commercial stone and building industry for the fine-grained banded deposits of calcite used in construction and carved goods; true Onyx is a banded silicate (SiO₂), a form of Chalcedony (Agate)
