Additional Information:
- Fossilized tree resin (C10H16O) formed over millions of years; volatile components evaporate out of the resin over time as it’s then exposed to sustained heat and pressure— molecules polymerize over millions of years and harden; it becomes significantly less soluble by most common solvents (as opposed to Copal which is typically only a 100,000 years old)
- Baltic Amber is thought to originate from an extinct family of prehistoric pines in Northern Europe; another prominent source (and region of occurrence) is the Agathis-like (kauri) evergreen conifers of prehistoric Australasia and Southeast Asia
- Oldest amber specimens found are believed to be from 320 million years ago
- Valued since Neolithic times, carved pieces have been discovered that appear to have been used as ornamentation, worn as adornments, or used in what appears to be spiritual/religious ritual
- Amber has been valued by many ancient cultures, including: Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, China, Myanmar/Burma; it was known throughout the Mediterranean through trade routes from the Baltic areas where it was found washed up on beaches of the Baltic coast now Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and Norway
- Other sources include: Italy, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic; **Madagascar and Colombian “Amber” is usually the much younger (and cheaper) Copal
- Amber comes in a wide range of colors: yellow, orange, brown, white, pale lemon, near black, red/cherry, and the rarer blue or green which also exhibits a tint of that color especially when fluorescing in UV light; all amber displays fluorescence of white, yellow, green, or blue (Copal does not)
- Many treatments exist for amber including clarifying cloudy amber by immersing in oil and/or gradually heating and fusing smaller pieces together through pressure; signs of treatment are “sun spangles” or scale-like glittering inclusions that form within
- Bright green amber is typically heat-treated
