In the 18th century Ural Mountain villages of Russia, rhodonite was called orlets, after the eagles (orels) that they believed would bring this stone to their nests; parents would place this stone in children’s cribs to bring protection,
courage, and the sharpness of an eagle

Additional Information:

• A manganese inosilicate (Mn,Fe,Mg,Ca)SiO₃ where the manganese may often be replaced by iron, magnesium, calcium, and sometimes zinc— because of this, Rhodonite is also considered to be a mineral group
• Varieties of rhodonite are distinguished by differing concentrations of the previously mentioned elements as well as the differing locations of origin (grayish-brown variety with as much as 20% calcium oxide is known as Bustamite)
• From Ancient Greek ῥόδον / rhódon meaning, Rose, referring to its pink to rose-red hue caused by the manganese cation (Mn²⁺); when oxidized it causes the black lines and streaks throughout, whereas minor surface oxidation presents as shades of brown
