• A blue-violet variety of Zoisite: Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)₃(OH), a calcium aluminum hydroxyl sorosilicate from the Epidote mineral group; its color is caused by small amounts of vanadium
• Although this mineral can be found in small quantities from a few other locations, official Tanzanite is from a very limited area of 7km long and 2km wide near the Mererani Hills near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania
• Officially recognized by the government of Tanzania as being discovered by Jumanne Mhero Ngoma, the Gemological Institute credits a Maasai tribesman, Ali Juuyawatu as the discoverer of this gem in 1967; Tiffany & Co. named, introduced, and marketed the stone in 1968 to the general public
• Raw Tanzanite displays trichroism: it appears blue, violet, and reddish-brown to clear when viewed along its 3 distinct axis lines of growth; because the reddish brown is not considered as attractive, it has become industry standard to heat-treat the stone, rendering it dichroic and removing the brownish “veil” to only display its blue to violet color
